At the start of May 2024, two of our CO2balance UK team made a visit to Uganda for the annual project site visit. With over 1000 boreholes having now been rehabilitated across our 5 Uganda projects, it is essential for the UK team to undertake physical audits to assess the status of the boreholes on the ground, facilitate discussions with the CO2balance Uganda team, and engage with communities. This helps to build relationships, highlight any areas of improvement, and celebrate our successes!

Audits were made on a representative sample of boreholes across the Central, Western and Northern regions of Uganda during a period of 2 weeks. During these audits, we were able to see the impact of our gender training for the Lango Safe Water Project, which has additional Gender Responsive Certification through the Gold Standard. The information from our trainings had been well distributed and gratefully received throughout the communities. The audits also provided an opportunity to continue encouraging communities to maintain good WASH practices, in particular the cleaning of jerrycans!

Witnessing the rehabilitation of a new borehole in Omoro district was also a highlight! This brought together district leaders from all levels with the community members in the village itself, to celebrate the reintroduction of safe water access.

The team also paid a visit to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, to which we make donations as part of our Central and Western Safe Water project. Meeting Daisy, the landowner, allowed us to discover how our donations have helped contribute to the conservation of the endangered white rhino. This included maintenance of the electric fence acting as a deterrent to poachers, but also the installation of boreholes across the sanctuary! A full circle moment!
